Prostate Cancer Screening – Get Tested South Africa

Prostate Cancer Screening

Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer affecting men in South Africa. It is estimated that 1 in 19 South African men will develop prostate cancer.

Early detection is key

Prostate cancer can be treated. Early detection allows for early treatment.

The PSA test

The PSA test is a blood test used to screen for prostate cancer.

PSA (prostate specific antigen) is a protein produced by the the prostate gland, a small gland that sits below the bladder in men.

The test shows the level of PSA in the blood. Increased PSA levels may indicate the presence of prostate cancer - in which case you may need to go for further testing. PSA levels may also be increased in other conditions such as prostate infections or BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia).

Doing a PSA test may help to detect prostate cancer at an early stage before any symptoms (e.g. difficulty starting urination and frequent urination at night, among others) are present.
